Amorphophallus (Voodoo Lily)

Amorphophallus

Amorphophallus, also known as Voodoo Lily, is from the Arum family. Strange and exotic, it is often grown more as a curiosity, although the starchy tuber is used for food in some parts of the world.  In the Fall, the bulb goes dormant, so bring it inside and store it in a dry, cool place, like a garage where it will not freeze.  In the Spring when you see the spike popping out, begin to water.

Amorphophallus Bulbifer

Amorphophallus Bulbifer has greenish or pinkish 18″ flowers. It is one of the prettiest of the Voodoo Lilies, and the inflorescence doesn’t smell that bad compared to others of the genus, with the smell only present for a few hours after the flower opens. By late summer each leaf produces cormels which can be removed and planted. Amorphophallus only blooms when mature and even so it doesn’t bloom every year. The Voodoo Lily likes shade and sheltered locations. Easy to grow.

Amorphophallus Nepalensis

Amorphophallus Nepalensis – Nepal Voodoo Lily – is native to India and Nepal.  The 18″ stalk will emerge in late June and be topped with a green shell surounding an inflorescence in shades of tan and green.  It’s quite showy, but also quite smelly, although the smell will fade quickly.  Summer flowering.  Bright red berries will form in fall.  Please note: all parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate crystals, an irritant to the mouth and esophagus.  They are toxic to cats and dogs.
