Allium Bulbs (Flowering Onion)

The Allium family (the Latin word for garlic) includes onions, leeks, garlic and an array of colorful globe-shaped flowers.  They are excellent for planting in groups or in a border.  The blooms are long-lasting in water, and some have flower heads that dry very well.  Grow the shorter species at the front of a border or in a rock garden.  Many seed freely and are excellent perennializers.  Several species also have culinary uses.  Seldom affected by rodents or deer!

As its name suggests, Neapolitanum Allium is a native of the Mediterranean. Also known as ‘Daffodil Garlic,’ it has loose white flowers. Propagates easily from bulbils at the end of the season.   May be forced indoors for earlier bloom.
